The Pink Mafia's first hit

Oh no he didn't... David Geffen's harsh remarks about the Clinton's set off the first real tit-for-tat of the '08 presidential  race.  I tell the story from the red carpet of the Academy Awards, of all places...

Reno 911!: Miami's Lieutenant Jim Dangle comes to CBS News HQ

The stars of the new movie, Reno 911!: Miami came to CBS News -- in character -- for an interview with me.  Our editor, Matt Kugelman, put together a fun little video, set to 70's-era crime show music, that captures the behind-the-scene spectacle.  Thanks Matt!

Romney campaign ad...already???

No, your eyes are not deceiving you -- it's only February of 2007, and presidential hopeful, Republican Mitt Romney, has already forked out campaign cash for a TV ad to run in several early voting states.  The ad, which will rotate between Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan and Florida is scheduled to start airing today.  He chose to include this line, which he has been repeating frequently on the campaign trail:  "I believe our laws ought to be written by the people, and not unelected judges."  A reference to Massachusetts' highest court making same-sex marriage legal?

There's something about Romney

Former Massachusetts governor, Mitt Romney, may not be the most recognized name among the current contenders for the Republican nomination for president in 2008.  But close followers of politics are taking him very seriously as a candidate.  I'll give you five reasons in this video blog posting why his campaign is a fascinating one to follow.

Bill Maher on picking the "smartest candidate" for president in '08

I love the quote below from from Bill Maher, written in an essay in The Huffington Post.  As we pick apart and analyze the millions of words spoken by each of the '08 political candidates, it's probably a good point to keep in mind:

Bill_maher_headshot "New Rule: There's more to being smart than just not misspeaking. The world is a complicated place. Sometimes it all feels like a runaway train of violence, resentment and insecurity - sort of like a family reunion at Ryan O'Neil's place. Which is why for this next election, we need to pick the smartest candidate, not the dullest one who simply never had a verbal gaffe and said a wrong word or phrase."

Proud to be Homophobic

Former Miami Heat superstar Tim Hardaway told a local sports radio show in Miami that he "hates gay people."
Hardaway made the comments while he was being interviewed by Dan Le Batard on 790 the Ticket Wednesday afternoon.

Hardaway
The five time All Star was asked how he would deal with a gay teammate.

Hear Hardaway's comments here.

Interview with the NBA's John Amaechi

On Wednesday, we interviewed former NBA player John Amaechi, who has just announced that he's gay.  The negative response of some current NBA players has sparked a debate among basketball fans across America.

Presidential Survivor

The '08 race is heating up, big time.  In this posting I use the "Survivor" show analogy to look at where we are in the process of electing our next president.  I hope to keep these campaign updates frequent.  Email me your thoughts on the presidential race.  I may read some of them in a posting later this week.

Grilled Rice

Sometimes we have video here at CBS News that you're not likely to see anywhere else.  There was an intriguing, and dare I say entertaining, exchange on Wednesday between Secretary of State Condoliza Rice and Congressman Gary Ackerman (D-NY) during a House International Relations Committee hearing.  Ackerman asked Rice, why not use some of the linguists fired from the military under the gay ban to satisfy the shortage at the State Department?  Ackerman's language is colorful... you'll hear him use the phrase "army of lesbians".

In this posting, I also dissect an article in Thursday's USA Today on gay teens.  Is there anything new in the piece?  To my eyes, a couple things...  check it out.

Gore Update

In an earlier pGore_photoosting I looked at the question of whether Gore would run for President.  Well yesterday, Thursday, his top advisers and supporters from his 2000 campaign met in Boston to discuss trying to draft Al Gore to run again.

CBS News is also reporting that Gore and British tycoon Sir Richard Branson have teamed up to offer a $25 million prize to inspire bright thinkers to combat global warming.
